SUMMER CATCH UP!

Early Summer 2014

Oh boy am I behind!  We have had a busy summer and I better start with the official opening of the season.

The annual Memorial Day paddle

Instead of kayaking, we took a six-man outrigger – really fun – Hanalei Bay to Tunnels and back with a BBQ that evening at Rick & Jane's.

CANOE RACES - REGATTA 5/31/14

Regatta season started with a bang.  Namolokama did really well and Gil was in 6 of 8 men’s races – of course they won all six.

Crews (men) for the day
Gil was in:
65+ guys, 60+ guys, Jr. men, Freshman men, 55+ men, and mixed 55+ men and women

For such a small canoe club, Namolokama O Hanalei really kicks butt!

 The ladies win too
No one else in sight!

Running the gauntlet - people off the beach come help celebrate the women's victory

Jr. men start - Namo in inside lane

 Juniors in the turn
Gil is sitting 3

After the turn - definitely in the lead

JR. men win - the regatta season started with a bang
Where are those other guys?

Laura Richardson - still a major sponsor for the club

Good friend and club sponsor, Laura requested we add a pinch of her mom’s ashes to Hanalei Bay at about the time she was doing the same in the English Channel.  With great pleasure the club rallied, just before men’s practice.  Gil went out with us to do the honors and then jumped in with the men and took off.

 Just before men's practice
Mahalo everybody!

The ladies rallied in the afternoon to decorate the canoe

Nothing like flowers and warm farewells in Hanalei Bay

Na Pali Catamaran

Just to fit in a little more water before heading to the mainland, we joined a friend and her family for a Na Pali snorkel.  Never turn down a trip up the coast!  Fantastic and we left and returned to Hanalei instead of having to drive all the way around the island to go out of Port Allen.

Na Pali in sight, almost to Tunnels

One of the sea caves - the water all lit up
The boat took us under for a cold shower!

 More sea cave, more waterfall
All sacred to the Hawaiians

 The Cathedrals

Pal, Mary Frances - first in the water
Her family still getting ready at the boat

One of my favorite fish - we call it an MFL

Truly one of my favorites - a Spotted Butterflyfish

Large cluster of black triggerfish and chubs

Looking up at the sky inside the "no ceiling cave"
Wouldn't want to be inside one when the top gave way . . .

No blue like the Na Pali blue

Back to Hanalei
Gotta say it is nice to leave and return so close to home

Not to leave out our lovely plants and animals

Shama Thrush

Just when I thought we had an interloper trying to harass our beautiful singing thrush, I realized it was his own offspring yammering for food.  Darling.  As we watched, it became obvious which little ones were male and female with their markings.

Dad and little girl (I mean female)

Baby Shama Thrush (male)

 Green papaya salad

On the home front, buying local produce is an adventure. I bought some green papays (a variety - not just unripe fruit) and then went online for a Thai recipe to make the salad.

Green papayas, tomatoes, green beans, cashews and dressing

How exotic is this - pure white inside including the seeds!

Final result - Green Papaya Salad
